Freeholder Gerry Scharfenberger will be running for office again in 2019. He will either seek his own full term on the Freeholder Board, having been elected to complete Assemblywoman Serena Dimaso’s term last month, or he will seek the Assembly seat being vacated by Assemblywoman Amy Handlin (R-Middletown).Art Gallagher | Filed under: Monmouth County, Monmouth County News, Monmouth GOP, New Jersey | Tags: 13th legislative district, Amy Handlin, Gerry Scharfenberger, Kevin Settembrino, Monmouth County News, Monmouth GOP, Serena DiMaso, Steve Massell, Tony Fiore | Comments Off on Scharfenberger in no rush to decide which office he will seek next year
Assemblywoman Amy Handlin’s announcement that she will not seek reelection next year inevitably creates speculation on who will run to replace her. While party leaders on both sides of the aisle would rather their troops stay focused on the election coming up next month, the jockeying has started given how infrequently a vacancy occurs in the 13th district.
Democrats, who normally lose badly in the district will likely have a contest for the two Assembly nominations next year, given Handlin’s vacancy and Serena DiMaso serving her freshman term. DiMaso put something of a target on her back with the Dems when she made a robocall criticizing LD 11 Assemblymembers Eric Hougtaling and Joann Downey for voting for Governor Murphy’s tax increases. Houghtaling and Downey responded to DiMaso’s robocall with an ethics complaint.
With the Assembly on top of the ballot next year, Dems will likely be motivated and funded, even in LD 13.

Atlantic Highlands Councilman Stephen Boracchia took to facebook yesterday evening and demonstrated why the Regular Republicans, who have been controlling the local party for the last several years, have lost 4 of the last 5 contested municipal offices.
Boracchia impugned the integrity of the Monmouth County Republican Organization team of candidates for promoting the fact that they do indeed have the support of the Monmouth County Republican Organization. Boracchia, who’s wife is a Regular Republican candidate for County Committee in District 4, implied that his military service makes him a good arbiter of other people’s integrity, while he inaccurately stated that the Monmouth County Republican Organization slogan is not an endorsement. Kim Guadagno will be elected the 56th Governor of New Jersey by less than 2000 votes.
The Associated Press will not call the NJ gubernatorial race until Thursday due to the failure of the vote reporting systems in Essex, Hudson, Camden and Middlesex counties which will prevent the vote from being counted. CNN and NJ.com will report rumors that the New Jersey election was hacked by the Russians.
Steve Sweeney will survive the millions spent against his reelection by the NJEA. The teachers’ union will lose considerable influence in Trenton and its membership will revolt against leadership and reform the association. Guadagno and Sweeney will have a stronger and more effective reform agenda than Christie and Sweeney had during the first Christie’s term. He’s been a great assemblyman, and together with Amy and Serena, will contribute to the long tradition of Monmouth county’s especially strong legislative delegations to the State House.”Art Gallagher | Filed under: 13th Legislative District, Monmouth County News | Tags: 13th legislative district, Amy Handlin, Assembly Republican Leader Jon Bramnick, Declan O'Scanlon, LD 13, Senator Joe Kyrillos, Serena DiMaso, Shaun Golden | 5 Comments »

Fair Haven Councilman Bob Marchese told MMM that he will not submit his Letter of Intent to run for Assembly in the 13th legislative district and that he is throwing his support behind incumbent Assemblywoman Amy Handlin and Freeholder Serena DiMaso.
“We are fortunate that Amy Handlin has chosen to continue her career in the Assembly,” Marchese said of Handlin who, until this morning was in a race to replace Senator Joe Kyrillos with her district mate, Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon. “Declan was always my guy to replace Senator Kyrillos. The notion of losing two accomplished incumbents in the district, Kyrillos and either O’Scanlon or Handlin, in one election cycle was not ideal.Art Gallagher | Filed under: 13th Legislative District, 2017 Elections, Monmouth County, Monmouth County News, Monmouth County Republican Committee, Monmouth GOP | Tags: 2017 Legislative election, Amy Handlin, Bob Marchese, Chairman Shaun Golden, Declan O'Scanlon, Fair Haven Councilman Bob Marchese, Gerry Scharfenberger, Monmouth County News, Monmouth GOP, Serena DiMaso | 1 Comment »
Breaking….MMM has learned that Assemblywoman Amy Handlin will not seek the Monmouth GOP endorsement for State Senate in the 13th Legislative District. Handlin will seek the Party’s endorsement for the Assembly seat she currently holds.

Tony Fiore, a Monmouth GOP Vice Chairman and a Middletown Township Committeeman announced his endorsement of Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon to replace Senator Joe Kyrillos in the State Senate next year.
“As a Republican elected official in the largest municipality in the 13th legislative district, the upcoming retirement of Middletown’s Senator Joe Kyrillos is vitally important to us,” Fiore said. “For the past 28 years we have been extremely fortunate to have Senator Kyrillos representing our district as an advocate for residents and taxpayers of our district and the entire state. His leadership and advocacy on behalf of our township and our district will be sorely missed. The next Senator from the 13th must continue to fight for us in Trenton while working with our local leaders to help keep our local municipalities and county under fiscally conservative Republican control.Art Gallagher | Filed under: Amy Handlin, Declan O'Scanlon, Monmouth County News, Monmouth GOP, Tony Fiore | Tags: 13th legislative district, Amy Handlin, Declan O'Scanlon, Joe Kyrillos, LD 13, Middletown, Monmouth County News, Tony Fiore | 2 Comments »
