Chris Smith’s Lyme Disease Amendment Passes House, Tells DOD IG to Investigate ‘Weaponization’ of Ticks

WASHINGTON, D.C.— The full House of Representatives passed an amendment offered by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) which directs the Inspector General (IG) of the Department of Defense to investigate the “possible involvement of DOD biowarfare labs in the weaponization of Lyme disease in ticks and other insects”  from 1950-1975.

According to Smith, he was “inspired to write the amendment”—now part of the House-passed 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)—by “a number of books and articles suggesting that significant research had been done at U.S. government facilities including Fort Detrick, Maryland and Plum Island, New York to turn ticks and other insects into bioweapons.”

Rep. Chris Smith’s remarks on the Mueller Report

Congressman Chris Smith issued the following statement regarding the Mueller report:

“After almost two years of vigorous investigation, Special Counsel Robert Mueller—aided by 19 lawyers, about 40 FBI agents, intelligence analysts, forensic accountants and others—has found that there was no collusion whatsoever by President Trump (or anyone associated with his campaign) with the Russians to influence the 2016 election.  This vindication is good news for America, not so good for the credibility of those who insisted on an almost daily basis that there was ample evidence which demonstrated that the President was guilty of collusion. In the end, Mueller’s Report proves that the truth matters. False charges should have no place in American politics.”

Congressman Chris Smith: St. Patrick Transformed The World

Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) made the following statement on Sunday, March 10, 2019:

Congressman Smith in Rumson on Sunday March 10 with Freeholder Gerry Scharfenberger, Middletown Committeemen Rick Hibell and Kevin Settembrino, Freeholder Deputy Director Pat Impreveduto, Middletown Mayor Tony Perry, Rumson Mayor Joseph Hemphill, Freeholder Sue Kiley and Middletown Committeewoman Pat Snell

The St. Patrick’s Day Parades across the country are great expressions of faith; celebrations of our rich Irish heritage and above all, a recognition of a saint who transformed not only Ireland but the world.

So special thanks to Jamie McManus and the Rumson St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee for providing a way for us to honor, revere and praise one of the greatest saints in all of Christendom.

And thank you for your leadership and generosity in supporting local charities particularly this year’s beneficiary Lunch Break of Red Bank.

St. Patrick, born in 387, endured six years of slavery in Ireland as a child yet went back after a daring escape to face unremitting danger and crushing setback only to persevere with an indomitable will to preach the good news of Jesus Christ, the forgiveness of sin and the way of salvation.

H.R. 651, a bill authored by Smith and introduced in January, would allow taxpayers to deduct 100% of their charitable deductions from their federal income taxes, even if they opt to use the standard deduction instead of itemizing their deductions. Read the rest of this entry »

Congressman Chris Smith’s Statement Regarding President Trump’s Announcement On Ending The Shutdown

“I welcome the President’s announcement. We need to immediately restore essential government functions—which I have repeatedly voted to do in recent weeks—while allowing more time to negotiate for funding to secure our border, which I voted for in December.

“In 2006, I and other members from both parties in Congress—including then-Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton—voted for the Secure Fence Act to authorize a physical barrier where applicable on our Southern border. The bill became law but was never adequately implemented, and by neglecting for years to build a border wall, we have placed a greater burden on the safety of our border security personnel and put undue stress on a primary function of government—keeping our citizens safe.
