Bob Walsh: “The Monmouth GOP’s Brand Is Tarnished”

Howell Councilman Bob Walsh, a candidate for one of two available nominations for freeholder at the Monmouth Republican Convention on March 22, said that the Monmouth Republican Party’s brand has been tarnished by the Burke Farm deal with Andrew Lucas and by the Brookdale Community College scandal that resulted in former Brookdale President’s Peter Burnham’s conviction for official misconduct and theft.

Incumbent freeholders, Director Lillian Burry and Deputy Director Gary Rich are seeking to be nominated for reelection at the convention.

Speaking on the record, Walsh said that many “neutral people, people who know nothing” that he encounters think that the Lucas farm deal and the Brookdale scandal are examples of Republican corruption.  Walsh said that he talks to these people and tries to correct their perception, “but it is out there and a lot of people think that way, it’s a common thread.”

Walsh was very careful not to speak negatively about Burry and Rich specifically while discussing his own candidacy.  “I don’t consider that I am challenging them,” he said, “I am seeking an office according to the rules.  No one is elected forever.  People complain and complain about government, yet keep electing the same people.  That’s what’s wrong with this country.”

“People say that government should be run as a business.  I have a very good record in business, as a licensed banker,  and a very good record as mayor of Howell that I am proud of.  I think I am an asset and will be an asset to the freeholder board. I have energy, passion and the flexibility to do the job.”

While not specifically accusing anyone of complacency, Walsh said that his candidacy and his service, if elected, would be a battle against complacency in county government.

“Complacency has no place if public service,” he said, “I am very pleased with some of the things I see happening since I started running.” He declined to elaborate.

Walsh said he expected that this November’s election will be more contentious that usual.

this helps Bob’s effort. Why define platform gripes that the Democrats are already polling about? The Brookdale issue is fixed and dead- the Lucas deal apparently involves a greedy guy falsifying documents.. Not the Party’s fault when a few misguided human beings goof up- our job is to put forth and elect better people than the other side, and by and large, we have, and do..our”brand” is to be the party of fiscal responsibility, and less taxes and regulations, and more personal liberty- everything the “Dem brand” isn’t! Why don’t we try and keep that in mind, instead of perpetuating more self- flagellation and self- loathing negativity? We can always count on the Dumbocrats to to that!

  3. Sancho Panza said at 8:19 am on February 27th, 2014:

@Not Too Sure: “The Brookdale issue” is NOT fixed. Larrison’s name is still on the big hall.

  4. Whoa said at 8:53 am on February 27th, 2014:

Wait a minute. Lillian and Gary tarnished the Republican brand? Didn’t this guy run as an independent against the republicans in Howell and didn’t he finance the recall effort against his new friend Joe DiBella?

  5. Tarnished? said at 8:58 am on February 27th, 2014:

If the Lucas deal tarnished Burry and Rich and the Monmouth GOP why is the Mayor of Manalapan and the Chairman of the Manalapan GOP (who both supported the Lucas deal) supporting Walsh? Was insn’t Walsh accusing them of tarnishing the GOP? Why would Walsh want support from these two “tarnished” republicans?

  6. @sancho said at 9:40 am on February 27th, 2014:

You really need to get off that unfair and ill- advised plank.. There absolutely would be NO Brookdale College period, without the vision and commitment of Mr. Larrison.. From obtaining the donation of the land to the county, to engaging the best planners, builders and educators available, to maintaining the county ‘s financial commitment to the school as the state continuously reduced the original financial obligation to the county colleges when formed, Brookdale remains the most affordable and finest community college in NJ. And no amount of untrue, nasty, and false political degradation will change those actual facts.. That one president got arrogant and sbusive of his position,

  7. @sancho, continued: said at 9:45 am on February 27th, 2014:

embarrassed the freeholders and school, and was brought to justice, and paid for his misdeeds, and the problems rectified, has NO bearing on the legacy Mr. Larrison left for generations of county residents to obtain affordable education and training to better themselves, right here at home.. You, Amy Mallet, and, sadly, retired Judge D ‘Amico need to get off that hackneyed and wrong reiteration!

That’s funny Bob….I thought you were part of them? So are you saying that you created a problem…..hmmmmmm?

Is this guy serious? Explain to me and everyone else what you have done Bob that warrants you becoming a Freeholder? My ears are awaiting.

  9. A Statement From Silence said at 11:02 am on February 27th, 2014:

This is sad, very sad. I saw this last night and wept for our party.

But, this is all that Mr.Walsh brings to the table. He represents nothing more than divisiveness and self aggrandizement. He is handing the election to the Democrats.

But then, this was forewarned weeks ago and it surfaced back in his earlier run for Freeholder. Walsh simply can’t help himself.

This is the image we want on our Board of Chosen Freeholders, a Board that is working reasonably well????

You think he won’t pull this kind of stunt down the road and embarrass the Republican party further?

Fellow Republicans, this is the kind of crap that Democrats play.

Does Mr. Walsh not realize he is one of three candidates and one of the other candidates will have to run with him? He’s certainly doing a good job of shooting off the feet of that campaign, I’ll say that for sure.

Does this Mr. Walsh not realize he is giving ammunition to the Democrats?

While Burry and Rich have flaws (all men are flawed) are the County Committee people really willing to create one big cluster frack of a fall campaign and chance letting Mr. Walsh loose on the county?

Looking back at some of the comments above, I agree with “@ Walsh,” I remember what “Whoa” speaks of above, I echo “@ Not too sure” and I stand with “@ Sancho.”

If you are going to make charges, you better be able to substantiate your position instead of muddying the waters. You better be able to speak exactly about what you are for.

Therefore it is muy importante to repeat @walsh’s question:

“Please list the 5 specific things that you think that both incumbent freeholders have done that you would not and why”

“and 5 things specific things that you would/will do that they have not”

Buyer beware. I am PROUD of the make up of the Board of Chosen Freeholders, despite the few flaws they have.

I for one must pray that enough County Committee people see this and realize that this nomination process has consequences, for once Pandora’s Box is opened; a person like Walsh becomes even more bolder and it is doubtful that he would ever be able to work together with the balance of the Board.

Instigators & dividers need not apply. This is not only sad, but very bad

Way to go Bob. You have done it again. At least this time you did it on the record. Talk about a guy that just cannot help himself! Instead of trasjing just two Freeholders this idiot now trashes them all!!! I think I get it now — Bobby is actually working FOR Lilliane and Gary’s re-election. The more he talks the better they look. The only person hurting the Republican brand Bobby is YOU. You tried to destroy the Republicans in Howell and you teamed up with Democrats to get elected. You came back to the Republicans when your Democratic friends turned on you. Costegan had the smarts to try and stop you. Too bad he could not. You Bobby are a disgrace. You show bow out of the race now and avoid creating any further disharmony. Way to go energizing the Democrats and the people NOT supporting you. This is pathetic!

  11. Gee said at 12:22 pm on February 27th, 2014:

0 for 11 Mr. Walsh myself included. Way NOT to win a race.

  12. Phuckflippy said at 12:38 pm on February 27th, 2014:

D’Amico is just jealous that his name isn’t on anything. Maybe someday they’ll come up with a new name for double and triple dipping by being nothing more than a political hack and name it after him.

  13. Big Blue said at 12:55 pm on February 27th, 2014:

Does that mean that if you fail in your bid for Freeholder you won’t go crawling back to the voters in Howell and claim that is where your heart is and that you are devoted to the town. That is until the next freeholder election.

  14. Bob English said at 1:05 pm on February 27th, 2014:

I get the part about people not wanting to upset the apple cart but I also understand how someone who is sincere about making a contribution in a political office not wanting to watch from the sidelines.

Walsh seems to be going out of his way not to attack LB or GR. I’d think he must have had enough encouragement with County R’s between his first “off the record” chat with Art and his on the record words now. In the end, the committee will make their choices and everyone will get behind the top two. That is the way things supposed to work.

  15. See Attached said at 1:27 pm on February 27th, 2014:

The details appear to be here:

DISTRICT General Tax Rate Effective Tax Rate
    HOWELL TWP 2.585 2.289
    COLTS NECK TOWNSHIP 1.618 1.587

How much or how little did each of these former local folks have to do with those numbers, and how much or how little did those numbers change on their watch?

  16. @Phuckflippy said at 1:27 pm on February 27th, 2014:

You got it wrong my friend. Flippy’s name is on quite a few things, namely the several checks he receives each month from the various pension funds he was enrolled in. Now how is that for a laugh? I know he is laughing to the bank.

As for Walsh’s assertion that the Republican brand inMonmouth County is tarnished –I kind of agree. Hence the name “Club Monmouth,” but that doesn’t seem to deter the voters of this county for voting Republican year after year. It seems there is always a “scandal” from year to year–such as the ones mentioned above (I wonder why Bob didn’t mention Guadagno Pension Gate and Operation Bid Rig??) with folks such as John Curely demanding an “investigation” and “heads to roll.”

So yes, Bob has brought up an interesting tactic. We just have to see where he is going with this. Afterall, if past behavior is indicative of future behavior–we know by now where he is going with this.

  17. William F said at 2:41 pm on February 27th, 2014:

Bobby’s comments are just stupid. He has run for Freeholder as many times as William Jennings Bryant ran for President. Time to move on to someone else. And he raises no solid issues. Just a loud: “YO, Vote for me, YO, I am Bobby Walsh, YO”. Sickening. Lillian was not a part of Club Monmouth nor was any other current member of the Board. Yet Bob trashes them all to avoid attacking LB and GR when we know he is trying to attack them both. This man just cannot help himself. You almost feel sorry for him. In Howell he won this last time as no one else ran. He is a “tired” brand and his act is playing thin everywhere. He is loud and obnoxious and has no place being a Freeholder. He has done next to nothing while in Howell except previously rip the party apart and then not seek a 2nd term as he would not have won the R nomination. If there are to be 2 new R candidates for Freeholder, one of them should not be Bobby. All he has done is create a campaign issue for the Democrats: “Even Republican leaders agree their time has come….” Republicans feel they are damaged goods”……so says Bobby Walsh. Way to go Bob….nice job!

  19. ethicsCount said at 3:28 pm on February 27th, 2014:

Having The largest building on the Brookdale campus named as a monument to an indeted crook just plain wrong. A monument to a crook on a school campus where our kids develop there ethics and character is especially insane.

The Freeholds and Board of Trustees should immediately correct this to demonstrate that ethics in governement do matter. They should be setting an example for these children, and not looking the other way.

  20. @ Ethics said at 4:27 pm on February 27th, 2014:

Those kids a) don’t even know who Larrison is and b) owe the facilities to his vision.

Even Dick Nixon ended up being loved by a huge amount of Americans. There is always a sense of forgiveness in most American’s hearts.

I am also tired of hearing about Bid Rig & Club Monmouth. Those days are long over.

Yes, I was and still am very upset at what Lucas pulled, but that was a private matter. As far as I can see the Freeholders did nothing illegal and preserved Green Acres.

That should be the overriding legacy of that situation, just like the positive things Larrison did for Brookdale.

What I want are Freeholders that offer a positive vision, not tear us down. Bob Walsh hasn’t done that for me. Hence, he is not getting my vote. I hope other County Committee people see the same thing and not base their vote on wanting a “Western County Freeholder”

As a matter of fact, I am worried about a Western Cowboy kind of Freeholder, shooting from his hip and mouth. Bob Walsh comes across as that kind of a person.

For now I will just remain a County Committee Person who wants to stay anonymous.

  21. William F. said at 4:52 pm on February 27th, 2014:

There you have it…..these comments say it all. Way to go Bobby. This man is a human Democratic voting machine against Republicans. Every time he opens his mouth, he does damage to the Republican Party, county, Freeholders, county committee….everyone. Lets pray he just stops talking! Or maybe he really is a part of the re-election team of Rich and Burry who benefit from his blubbering. My lord this man just can’t help himself.

  22. ethicsCount said at 5:08 pm on February 27th, 2014:

Larrison’s criminal abuse of his public position is not something that can be “ballanced” against something good. He crossed the line.
A bank robber that helps an old lady cross a street, is still a bank robber.
The Freeholders and the Board of Trustees should be embarrassed fornot standing up for ethics in government service.
Larrisson’s name should not be on a pubic monument to that crook.

  23. @ Ethics Count said at 5:22 pm on February 27th, 2014:

Let me ask a simple question. Have you gone to a Freeholders meeting and made that request?

  24. Shound't have to attend a meeting said at 5:51 pm on February 27th, 2014:

Hey this all reminds me, last week or so Lillian said she’d run on her record. Freeholder Gary Rich sent a letter in the mail with his record of accomplishments in public service as a Freeholder and I like his record and ambition as I suspect most do. Does Lillian have a printed record and can someone post a link to it? Or will she be mailing such a record also?

  25. William F said at 8:53 pm on February 27th, 2014:

I hear Bobby comments on this site…..any back tracking for us now Bobby? Maybe you can say some other gems the Dems can use to whack us over the head with. So Bobby, what do you have to say now?

  26. If it were your father said at 11:24 pm on February 27th, 2014:

who devoted nearly 40 years in public service, while managing a family business offering credit for coal and oil to regular folks who were broke, to keep them warm, while building some of the finest county facilities and systems ever in NJ, who became sick with cancer, and toughed it out and came to Freehold til he couldn’t stand any more, to listen to both the powerful and the small, mediate problems, and come up with sensible solutions, and who, in the end, near death, got betrayed by a best friend and driver, to save that guy’s sorry neck and keep his own pension, how would you feel? The man died, before he ever had any kind of trial or chance to defend himself, and clear his name!.. If you want to continue to buy the lies, and spew venom on a (dead) true hero of this county you never even met, and it makes you feel so big and perfect and “ethical” yourself, go ahead- but know that, if it were your relative, you might act quite differently! And, while at it, sure, we all make typos on our iPads and phones, but, seriously, perhaps an affordable brush- up or remedial English class,at Larrison Hall might be in order for ya,at some point!

  27. William F said at 1:30 am on February 28th, 2014:

You see it is this sort of politics spewed by Bobby Walsh that tears parties apart. It is what he did in Howell and what he will do if a Freeholder. He has no “new ideas”. He just smears Lillian and Gary to win, no matter who he damages. Nice going “Bobby”. You have managed to screw things up again. Lillian and Gary have my vote and I’ll bet most other CC people as well. Maybe after this, your 39th time running for Freeholder, you will just STOP.

  28. Sarah said at 7:20 am on February 28th, 2014:

I am saddened to see these remarks by Mr. Walsh. He is a flawed candidate that should pull out the race now and avoid the Republican Party any further embarrassment by his actions. We need people who will unite the party and not divide it. While people are not elected to life-terms as he says, if you want us to elect someone else, give us better candidates than what we have now. Mr. Walsh is not a better candidate. He has stooped to a type of smear politics that does not have a place here. If he feels we are so damaged then perhaps he should run with the Democrats. Why not? He is already giving them all the ammunition they need. Are we to believe he is our savior? I think Curly and Arnone have done a great job for the people. So have Lilian and Gary who are ethical people and not loud-mouth “hot heads” like Mr. Walsh. Mr. Walsh, shame on you! You just lost my vote.

  29. @ Ethics Count said at 8:48 am on February 28th, 2014:

I ask this because if not, you have no right to complain here on a blog.

Is it important that a Freeholder be a person of truth and integrity?

I was there when the Howell PBA gave its first-time ever endorsement to Bob Walsh.

The speech he gave contained a big promise which he reiterated ad nauseum. Vote for me, Howell, he said because I have absolutely no higher aspirations for office. I only want to serve Howell, he said. I am one candidate, he said, who you can count on that has no desire WHATSOEVER, he said, for any higher office than Howell.

  32. Kathy Baratta said at 3:23 pm on February 28th, 2014:

I don’t live in Howell but I do live in Monmouth County. So what does my son being a cop in Howell have to do with the office of Monmouth County Freeholder or if people have integrity or not?

Your low expectations of personal integrity. Is that just for others or is this personal projection?

  33. Kathy Baratta said at 3:30 pm on February 28th, 2014:

P.S. As you don’t use your own name I have no idea who you are or where you’re from. However, what is obvious is that you’re not from Freehold Township. Home of one of the finest governing body’s in Monmouth County – bar none.

So many people in my town who come to mind who are so far above your low expectations for elected office; Dorothy Avallone, Anthony Ammiano and on and on. They keep getting elected because they didn’t have to lie to get elected the first time nor any time after. They just had to do what they do that make Freehold Township a jewel in the Monmouth County crown.

  34. If we split the party said at 3:47 pm on February 28th, 2014:

over personalities and personal aspirations, we will give a solid, well- planned and well- run county over to the likes of the north Jersey/ NY transplants, who being their lib voting patterns and ways of governing here,to mess things up- in Freehold, they are still cleaning up messes the one year of Dem rule in ’09 wrought.. so, looks like we need to stick with the proven leadership, fight the dragons, and keep Monmouth in Rep. hands- as someone said above, they might not be perfect, but they have cut the budget over the last 4 yrs. while keeping what is best about the county going well- we don’t need nasty negative people, with no positive records or ideas, to tear decades of progress apart, at this point.

An exploding tax rate, allowing a culture of insanity as employees get million dollar settlements over law suits and letting Route 9 go to pot all while he kisses the back side of major developers. The hits just keep coming Bobby. Maybe it is time to just go back to being “Bobby” and stop ruining the Republican Party.

Seems to this observer, that if the vote were held today amongst the MMM community, Walsh would lose by a landslide.

But, what is important is how people outside of this community feel. It would be nice if there were a way to post an accurate “one vote only poll” and ask County Committee to chime in via that poll in the interest of seeing how widespread Mr. Walsh’s support is.

But then, the only poll that counts is when the County Committee meets. So, until then if Walsh is the only candidate speaking via this blog; it’s going to look like a deluge of disappointment in Mr. Walsh.

Actually, I am kind of happy that Burry & Rich are keeping above this. Only makes them look better, with “gravitas.”

I notice someone above asked a question to Mr. Walsh about “5 things.” Does Mr. Walsh not have an answer, or is he afraid of shooting his mouth off again?

Perhaps Bob is reading these posts very smugly (we know he reads and posts) and is laughing his ass off at the outrage posted here–by the whopping 40 or so posters.

Bob is correct about the tarnish. Many of the Republicans are connected to Christie, aka “friends of Christie.”

We had as Bob says the Brookdale debacle, and others such as Bid Rig, and Guadagno pension gate. Where is your sense of outrage with these other scandals that has given Monmouth elected officials the moniker of “Club Monmouth?”

“Where is the collective outrage of the County Committee people,” you say????

Maybe we see that the charges you make are NOT problems. After all, if they were, we would have lost seats in the last few elections.

Obviously we didn’t, and obviously Monmouth County voters didn’t see problems either.

  48. Observer said at 1:02 pm on March 2nd, 2014:
